Additionally, the park has recorded more than 435 bird species, including 35 Guinea-Congo forest biome bird species, spot-breasted ibis, Haartlaub’s duck, Congo serpent eagle, chestnut-flanked goshawk, and red-thighed sparrowhawk. Furthermore, the park has another 12 species with extremely little distribution, such as the western bronze-naped pigeon and the yellow-throated cuckoo.
The park is also home to four distinct ethnic groups including Bwamba farmers, Bakonjo cultivators, Batuku cattle keepers, and Batwa pygmies who traditionally lived as hunter-gatherers on the forest edge. During the wet season, large areas of the low-lying park may flood, reminding us of the time when the entire valley was at the bottom of a lake for seven million years.
Semuliki National Park is also famous for its hot springs that bubble up from the depths, demonstrating the powerful subterranean forces that have been shaping the rift valley during the last 14 million years.
